Master Match-Grade Accuracy with Hodgdon VARGET® Smokeless Powder

In the relentless pursuit of long-range precision, standard rifle powders simply fall short. Inconsistent muzzle velocities, wide standard deviations, and sudden pressure spikes caused by shifting weather conditions can instantly transform an expensive custom rifle into an unpredictable shooter. Whether you are aiming for a national championship on the firing line or lining up a critical shot on game across a windy valley, inconsistent propellants ruin confidence and waste costly components.

Hodgdon VARGET® was engineered to solve these exact problems. As the flagship propellant of Hodgdon’s world-renowned Extreme Series, VARGET® is widely recognized as the gold standard for small to medium-bore rifle reloaders. Delivering fast ignition, clean combustion, and unmatched thermal immunity, Hodgdon VARGET® produces the relentless, tack-driving precision required by competitive match shooters, precision handloaders, and serious hunters worldwide.

Why Hodgdon VARGET® Dominates the Precision Reloading Market

1. Revolutionary Extreme Technology™ Temperature Stability

Ambient weather fluctuations are one of the biggest enemies of consistent ballistics. Conventional rifle powders suffer severe velocity changes when temperatures rise or drop, causing drastic vertical stringing on target. A load meticulously developed during a cool 50°F spring session can produce dangerous pressure spikes in 95°F summer heat or experience sluggish velocity drops during sub-zero hunting seasons.

Hodgdon VARGET® eliminates thermal variance. Crafted with advanced temperature-insensitive chemical formulations, VARGET® maintains virtually identical muzzle velocity whether you are firing in extreme winter frost or scorching desert heat. This thermal stability ensures your point of impact (POI) remains steady across changing climates, giving you complete confidence every time you step behind the trigger.

2. Versatile Burn Rate for Small & Medium Rifle Cartridges

Positioned in the ideal medium-burn rate category, VARGET® is arguably the most versatile rifle propellant ever created. Its small extruded kernel design allows for efficient packing density and controlled, uniform gas expansion.

While initially designed for heavy-bullet loads in .308 Winchester, VARGET® excels across an exceptionally wide spectrum of popular calibers, from high-velocity varmint cartridges like the .223 Remington / 5.56 NATO to classic hunting rounds like the 7mm-08 Remington and .243 Winchester.

3. Match-Grade Single-Digit Standard Deviations (SD)

In long-range precision disciplines, single-digit Standard Deviations (SD) and minimal Extreme Spreads (ES) are non-negotiable. Hodgdon VARGET® is legendary among benchrest and PRS (Precision Rifle Series) shooters for consistently delivering low velocity spreads across long strings of fire. Tight velocity consistency translates directly to minimal vertical dispersion at 300, 600, and 1,000 yards.

4. Clean-Burning Formulation with Built-In Copper Fouling Control

VARGET® burns exceptionally clean, leaving minimal carbon residue inside your barrel and action. Additionally, its advanced formulation includes chemical additives designed to reduce metallic copper fouling during high-volume strings of fire. Less fouling means longer shooting sessions between barrel cleaning, extended barrel life, and preserved accuracy throughout demanding competition matches.

Top Caliber Applications for Hodgdon VARGET®

If you handload for popular medium-capacity rifle cartridges, Hodgdon VARGET® is an essential, high-demand staple on your bench.

Premier Caliber Matches:

Pro-Level Handloading Tips for VARGET®

• Metering & Dispensing: VARGET® features short extruded sticks that meter noticeably smoother than older, longer extruded powders. However, for precision competition loads where exact grain weights are critical, dispensing with an electronic trickler ensures zero kernel cutting and true sub-half-grain accuracy.

• Primer Pairing: Standard Large Rifle or Small Rifle primers work exceptionally well with VARGET® in most ambient conditions due to its easy ignition profile. For sub-zero winter hunting, test Match or Magnum primers to guarantee crisp, uniform ignition.

• Load Data Reference: Always cross-reference your load development with verified data from the official Hodgdon Reloading Data Center. Start at the recommended starting charge weight and work up incrementally while watching for pressure signs.
